Product Description Finally, a chicks guide to the game that is smart, knowledgeable, and thoroughly female. If I wasnt already a football fan, this book would turn me into one.Star Jones Reynolds,co-host of ABCs The ViewYear after year, Sunday afternoons and Monday nights during the NFL season have belonged to men. While they cheer and argue play calls, the women in their lives are relegated to beer and chip detail. Its time for these women to join the action, and Holly Robinson Peete, star of 21 Jump Street, For Your Love, and Hangin with Mr. Cooper, and wife of NFL quarterback Rodney Peete, has written this hip, smart, cheerful guide to help them do so.Peete shares her infectious enthusiasm for pro footballand takes the complexity out of the game by breaking it down to its component parts. She explains the role of each position player, provides a rundown of all on-field penalties and referees hand signals, and offers an illustrated guide to some of the most common plays in the NFL. She gives her take on the most memorable plays in NFL history and dishes some inside dirtin a breezy, girl-talkin narrative that promises to turn the novice spectator into a well-informed football fanatic.

Even my guy liked it... January 1, 2009 Vegas Maus (Las Vegas, NV United States) When I first started dating my boyfriend, I hated football. It was even worse when I would try to talk to him and he would suddenly get interested in the television because someone made an amazing football play. I got this book because I was tired of being a football widow and I wanted to learn the basics of the game. I was not disappointed! The writing style was funny, girly, and informed. The author not only talked about the rules of the sport, but also history such as important games from the past. When I finished the book, I knew quite a bit about football and was able to (finally) understand things like why first downs are important or what exactly a center does. Some things I even got to explain to my boyfriend, and of course, that made my day. I'm now a huge fan and never miss my team play. It is something that I can enjoy with him in exchange for the chick flicks he watches for me. :) Plus, I truly enjoy the sport now. I never thought I would say something like this, but go Steelers!

Greatest football book ever November 10, 2008 Grace Joseph (Lasalle, Quebec Canada) It's so easy to understand the game with this book. I like the history as well as the explanations. It makes football easier to watch and a more pleasant experience all-around. Great book ! Easy to follow and a terrific reference guide...

Decent but Not On Target November 2, 2008 Courtney Mann (Raleigh, NC) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
After reading many of the reviews on Amazon, I decided to purchase this book thinking that it was the best choice for an intro to football for women, or rather, for people who don't know much about football. Generally, when something is written about sports and "for women", I tend to think that what the writer really means is that they start at the beginning with no assumptions about things you already know (or should know) about the sport because women are generally thought to be less knowledgeable about sports than men are. While I'll not debate this point in this review, I will say that books like this make me understand why women may not be as interested in sports as men are. Books (and people) like this assume that women can't be interested in a sport the same way that a man is... that she has to be convinced that sports are worth while. The book has loads of knowledge about football and plenty of top 10 lists to acquaint you with players, coaches and games. There's plenty of terminology and strategy included as well. However, there's also an entire chapter devoted to football wives talking about their husbands schedules (and so on) as well as comments about how "cute" football huddles are and gushing over the ties to Holly's love of ice cream and the game. Honestly, I'm just waiting for a beginner's guide to a sport that isn't cute and cuddly to "appeal to women" and, alternatively, isn't titled "the idiot's guide to ...". What I want is a book that respects me as a person who is truly interested in the sport *for what the sport is* but is also aware that some people just never learned about a particular sport and don't have any knowledge base that can be assumed. Over all, I would say that the amount of knowledge in the book is good for a beginner's guide. But, I would also say that if you are A)someone who likes to cut to the chase or B) not a "girly girl" who wants to hear about Holly Peete's childhood, family life, and lists of things that she finds cute when you are buying a book to learn about football... go with another book. If, on the other hand, you do find that those types of things help you to stay interested in what you are reading then by all means buy this book. I'm not arguing that finding sentimental stories entertaining is a bad thing... I'm just arguing that, as a devoted fan of various other sports, that's not what I am looking for in a book about sports.
